Clergy: Get Smarter About Your Taxes
The United Methodist Foundation hosted the “Clergy: Get Smarter About Your Taxes” webinar on Feb. 16 to provide clergy with the information needed to navigate their tax return preparation.
“We are here to support our clergy, and this webinar is a good resource we can provide them,” said Chris Spencer, Foundation president.
Clergy face unique challenges when it comes to things like Social Security payments, estimated tax payments, housing allowances or exclusions, and reimbursed expenses. Clergy also have questions about the implications of the pandemic on their 2021 tax situation. The webinar addressed these issues and more.
Rev. Don Joiner, a Certified Financial Planner specializing in financial planning and tax prep for clergy, and Rev. Ken Sloane, the director of stewardship for Discipleship Ministries, spoke to the 46 registered participants about these challenges and gave critical advice for this tax season.
Joiner is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He served churches and conference staff in the former Detroit Conference and on the staff of Discipleship Ministries (formerly General Board of Discipleship) for 35 years, specializing in stewardship and planned giving. He has published 13 books including, “Christians Doing Financial Planning.”
Sloane is a clergy member of the Greater New Jersey Conference where he served over 20 years in local church ministry.
