Grant Spotlight: Faith & Fitness at St. Paul’s UMC
What began with a six-person sign-up list has grown into a thriving ministry at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe. Today, 30 people are registered for Faith & Fitness, with 15-25 participants gathering each Monday and Thursday for Chair Aerobics.
The program, funded by a grant from the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana, was created to help seniors improve balance, mobility, strength and flexibility. But Pastor Gene Bryson says it has quickly become so much more.
After each exercise session, participants gather for prayer and soon will add a short devotional time. The ministry has also welcomed people from outside the St. Paul’s congregation who come for the fellowship and connection. That connection is extending into other areas of church life, with St. Paul’s seeing increased participation in its other senior ministries.
“The Spirit is moving among us, spreading the joy of fellowship, encouragement from friends and fun as we are exercising!” said participant Kathy Wells.
Rita Smith summed it up another way: “We have learned how to laugh at ourselves and have fun!”
For Pastor Bryson, that is the heart of the ministry. “We appreciate the support of the Foundation which helps us make disciples for Jesus Christ.”
A grant can fund a program, but the real impact is what happens when people come together. At St. Paul’s, Faith & Fitness is helping people move, connect and grow in faith — one chair exercise at a time.
